It's common knowledge that disk brakes are more efficient than drum brakes.
This is why we insist on disk brakes front and rear on all of our Argo
scooters. Our Argo scooters have passed the DOT braking tests with flying
colors, but we wanted to see how we stacked up against a few representative
brands.
All scooters used in the test had brakes sufficiently broken in. We
used two experienced riders of similar weight. We set up an off-road
course where the riders could get to a stabilized speed of 30 mph. We used
a radar gun to test the accuracy of the speedometers of the various scooters.
The Argo was dead on at 30 mph, so when not being tested, was used as the "pace
car" to insure the accuracy of the braking tests.
Each rider was instructed to come to a line on the pavement at 30 mph, at
that point they were to panic stop. They were told to avoid locking the
brakes since a skidding wheel does not brake as efficiently. We tested
with both brakes, front brake only and rear brake only.
Each rider made 3 runs, then switched scooters and made 3 more runs.
The 6 measured stopping distances for each test were then averaged. The
table below shows the results.
